Just a couple months ago my friend went to the Philippines for the first time to meet her family and learn more about her culture. The images she posted along her journey were spectacular–a vivid mix of smiling people, gorgeous beaches, delicious looking food, and a peak inside everyday living. The juxtaposition between those pictures and what I’m seeing this week is jarring.

For all the troubles we focus on in our lives here in the US, few will ever experience the devastation and trauma of what the people in the Philippines are currently facing. It puts things in perspective, it reminds me of how lucky I am, and it compels me to give back.

The main thing needed in the Philippines right now seems to be money–for food, for medicine, for rebuilding. The Huffington Post has compiled a list of organizations that are actively aiding the victims of the typhoon. Please choose one and donate.
